A visit to Bis Boutique Solidaire

Bis Boutique Solidaire
is a Parisian secondhand shop with a difference. One, it’s cheap for Paris, and two, its concept revolves around the social and solidarity-based economy. In other words, buy from Bis Boutique, and you’ll be getting a fashion bargain while helping others.

Bis Boutique buys items wholesale from associations in Paris and Ile de France, allowing these associations to finance their actions in support of deprived populations. It then sells, recycles or gives clothing to partner associations. Since 2012, Bis Boutique Solidaire has helped over 100 people by employing and training them, enabling over two-thirds to find work in the mainstream economy.

The organization says that between 2012 and 2015, more than 300,000 items were sold through its shop on Boulevard du Temple in Paris’ 3rd arrondissement. Since then, Bis Boutique Solidaire has opened a second outpost in the French capital, which I’ll blog about in the coming weeks.

The Boulevard du Temple store features clothes for women, men and children, as well as shoes and accessories. Brands range from Asos to Armani, and prices are attributed depending on the brand and condition of the item. When I visited, late on a Monday afternoon, the shop was very busy, proving the popularity of the concept. Prices are said to be between 5% and 15% of the retail price.

If you have the patience to flick through the rails, you’ll surely come up with a gem. I spotted a Maje t-shirt for 6, an Asos Curve prom dress for 12 and a silk scarf for 3.

While I didn`t see anything I loved enough to buy on this trip, I have previously bought a Banana Republic jumper for 12 and a Chloe dress for 16.
